Family Business Centers, Family Businesses Meet Capitol Hill Representatives

Former U.S. Senator Mark Begich
Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) served in the Senate from 2009 to 2015 and has owned or worked in several of his family’s businesses throughout his long career. In Congress, Senator Begich served on several powerful committees including Appropriations, Budget, and Commerce. He introduced several pro-business bills over his two terms in the Senate, including legislation that would increase the employer health insurance tax credit and allow for immediate expensing of any depreciable business assets.

A business owner by age 16, Senator Begich began his career when he and his brother opened two family businesses in Alaska: a nightclub for teens and a vending machine operation. A few years later, Senator Begich obtained a business license, allowing him to open a jewelry store and assist in the management of several of his family’s real estate properties. Senator Begich currently employs over 200 people through several business ventures across Alaska and the contiguous United States.

We are in a battle and need your support. It is a critical time. The current Administration and Congress are threatening sweeping, historic tax increases on the very businesses that are supposed to lead our country out of the current economic climate created by the covid pandemic. On our last Policy and Taxation Group Members’ Zoom, we discussed the war being waged against generationally owned businesses built on hard work and lifetime of savings. Anyone concerned with step-up in basis elimination, the estate tax exemption, increased income and capital gain taxes, and the creation of a wealth tax should be concerned.

Policy and Taxation Group is your voice in Washington on economic freedom. We advocate for policies that allow American families to fully enjoy the economic liberties and benefits of a robust free market unique to our nation. For over 25 years, we have been the loudest voice in the nation’s capital on eliminating the death tax. This ill-conceived tax has a destructive impact on families, family businesses, job creation, and the national economy.
